Programme
The Proms, short for “The Promenade Concerts,” were founded in 1895 by the English conductor Sir Henry Wood. The aim was to make classical music more accessible to the general public by offering affordable tickets and creating an informal atmosphere where attendees could stand or promenade during the performances.
The first Proms season took place at the Queen’s Hall in London and featured a series of concerts that attracted a diverse audience.
After the Queen’s Hall was bombed during the war, the Proms relocated to the Royal Albert Hall in London, where they have been held ever since. The Royal Albert Hall’s large capacity and distinctive circular design contributed to the unique atmosphere of the Proms.
The Last Night of the Proms, in particular, is a colorful and patriotic event with British flags, singing of traditional songs, and audience participation. The BBC has been a major supporter of the Proms since the early 20th century.
The Proms have evolved with the times, introducing contemporary music and expanding their efforts to engage with new generations of music enthusiasts.
The Scots’ Church Proms Concert – though smaller in scale – will capture some of the same energy and joy as the English original. Please join us for a fun afternoon of music and song.
