Rev Justin Ang
Justin is the Senior Assistant Minister at Scots’. He is originally from Sydney but did spend time in Melbourne some years ago. He graduated from Christ College in Sydney and has been a minister of the Presbyterian church of Australia since 2018. He has been married to Rachel since 2015. They have a Japanese Spitz named Nadia. He loves thinking about systems and listening to people tell their stories.
Likes: discovering new coffee places, reading (real) books, listening to vinyl records, stationery, sports climbing and travelling to foreign countries with Rachel.
Dislikes: mould and spiders.
Rev Dr Arthur Keefer
Arthur pastors the ScotsCity congregation and oversees the development of other “next generation” ministries. Originally hailing from the east coast of the USA, he spent the last 9 years in England before immigrating to Melbourne in December 2023 with his wife, Emem.
Arthur earned a PhD in Old Testament at the University of Cambridge during his time in the UK and then taught Theology at Eton College while serving as a school chaplain. He is a keen academic and has published books on Proverbs and Ecclesiastes. He remains active in academic biblical scholarship. Arthur’s great joy is to help people understand the Bible and see them live for God no matter the circumstances.
Likes: Thrills, plans, music of all kinds, exploring new cities with Emem.
Dislikes: Not understanding how things work.
Leonie Tonkin
Leonie joined the Scots’ Church Choir in May 2003 while studying Reformation history and writing her honours thesis on the hymns of Martin Luther. She an accomplished recorder player and has sung with the Choir of Ormond College, the Australian Chamber Choir, the Melbourne Octet and Ensemble Gombert.
Leonie works for the public service in a policy role, and spends her limited spare time baking, running and helping her daughters with piano practice.
Vaughan McAlley
Vaughan joined the Scots’ Church Choir as a 17-year-old music student in 1988. After becoming Principal Tenor in 2001, he sang the part of the Evangelist in the Scots’ Choir’s first performance of JS Bach’s St John Passion in 2003, and was renowned for his enraged performance of Thou shalt break them from Handel’s Messiah. As a composer, he has written a number of pieces for the choir, including anthems for his wedding with Leonie Tonkin, and for the baptisms of their daughters Eleanor and Genevieve. He has also arranged hymns for choir with brass, timpani and organ. He is a long-time member of the chamber choir Ensemble Gombert, and enjoys working on the perfect espresso.
Jennifer Chou
Jennifer Chou began her role as the Associate Organist at Scots Church in 2023, after having been the Director of Music at Toorak Uniting Church for 11 years. She had taught the organ for the Australian Catholic University, since 2015 she teaches the organ for Melbourne High School.
As a recitalist, Jennifer has given organ concerts in major Australian town halls and Cathedrals. Overseas, she has appeared as soloist in places including the Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris and the Westminster Abbey in London, the Hong Kong Cultural Centre, the Esplanade Concert Hall in Singapore, and many more.
After having obtained a Master of Music degree in organ performance and church music at Northwestern University USA where her teacher was Wolfgang Rübsam, Jennifer studied in Paris and Toulouse for 5 more years with world sought after teachers including Susan Landale, Michel Bouvard and Jan Willem Jansen. She concluded her studies in the Cycle de Perfectionnement with Premier Prix d’Orgue à l’unanimité in Toulouse.
Douglas Lawrence
Douglas Lawrence AM has been Director of Music at Scots’ Church since 1984. He teaches organ at the University of Melbourne and was Master of the Chapel Music at Ormond College from 1982 to 2006. He has been awarded an AM for services to music.
Douglas plays the organ most weeks for the Sunday 11am worship service, as well as training and conducting the choir.
Throughout the year Douglas is responsible for producing, directing and conducting many concerts and performances with the choir and with various instrumental ensembles, both in Scots’ Church and beyond.
The Rieger Organ that was installed in 1999 was built to Douglas’ specification and it has proven to be a wonderful continuation of the musical tradition and standard that has been the hallmark of Scots’ Church since its foundation.
Rev Litha Heshusius
Litha came to Melbourne 30 years ago. She completed her Law degree in Indonesia, but God had instilled in her a call to serve Him upon her arrival to Australia. Despite having an Australian law degree lined up at Deakin University, Litha changed courses to theological studies, and became ordained as a Baptist Minister in 2008. Litha loves her pastoral care role, she gains wisdom and understanding through engaging and praying with the congregation at Scot’s Church.
Litha is married to Hans, and they are blessed with a son named Winston. They also have a dog named Boogie, who is a German Shorthaired Pointer.
Likes: Smiling, feeding wild birds, travelling and photography.
Dislikes: Cold drinks.
Johnson Wang
Johnson has lived between many borders: born between millennial and Gen Z, he grew up in East and West, and learned abacus from grandpa and programming at uni. He often wonders if he’s more a tech guy or humanities guy, and whether he should spend more time playing music or sports. Whichever the case, Johnson knows he belongs to a good King and has a bright new creation to look forward to, one marked by Jesus’ reign of glory and righteousness. He is studying at seminary and helps co-ordinate the evening service Scotscity.
Rev Phil Campbell
Phil has been serving as a Presbyterian Minister since 1989 with the help of his wife Louise. Prior to ministry training he worked as an Electrical Engineer in the NSW Department of Main Roads and a freelance computer journalist. Phil is author and co-author of a number of books, including “Saving Eutychus,” a primer for theological students learning to preach without putting people to sleep – which remains Phil’s goal every Sunday. Phil and Lou have four adult children and a growing bunch of grandchildren.
Likes: Phil and Louise love good coffee, and after years as a guitarist Phil is back to square one as a bluegrass banjo beginner. They enjoy walking in the city.
Dislikes: Gardening. That’s about it really.
Douglas Lawrence
Douglas’ ministry is through music. As has been said by various writers “music expresses the inexpressible” so Douglas plays the organs, conducts the choir week by week, organizes special music at Easter and Christmas and organizes the September International Organ Series.
Likes: Where to start? At the church one of my great pleasures is to show the organ to children who often come into the church with their parents or in school groups- and cooking!
Dislikes: Carpet in Churches.
